When it comes to cross-promotion, anything is on the table, so long as you feel you can make it work and that people will want to try it. For example, GTA Online is one of the most popular online games out there, and as a result, Rockstar Games is more than willing to do what it takes to make it more popular, or other companies are willing to “cash in” on its clout to try and get more attention brought their way. As noted by Rockstar Intel, the company has worked out an event with Discord so that you can get awards within their servers.
Here’s how they broke it down:
“In this case, watching the GTA Online A Safehouse in the Hills update trailer within Discord’s quest system will grant you 700 orbs, Discord’s own currency. Orbs recently launched. They can be used in the Discord shop to earn Discord Nitro, profile decorations and more.”
Now, there are some steps that you have to follow to get the orbs themselves, so go to the site and follow them one at a time so you don’t mess up and miss out on your chance to get the reward. Now, is this the biggest thing ever? Obviously not, but these kinds of things happen in Discord more than you think, and it’s clear that Rockstar Games saw some value in it, and thus allowed it to happen. You can make of it what you will.
As for the new content that Rockstar tied the cross-promotion to, that’s been a big hit with fans. Not only did the content bring back a fan favorite character in Michael, showing off what the protagonist had been doing post-campaign, but players finally got the chance to own their own mansions and see how they would decorate one. Some players have already gone the extra mile to buy all the mansions; thus, they can have a whole fleet of them!
That also doesn’t talk about the sweet cars they’ve got, fighting off the AI overlords, and so on. In many respects, this new content is the “consolation prize” for Rockstar Games delaying the new game’s release. It sucks, but at least there’s something to do in the meantime. Plus, after beating the content, some players even think it might hold a clue as to how the whole online game mode might come to an end.
We’ll see how it all plays out.
