New Nintendo Direct To Focus Solely On Donkey Kong Bananza

June 16, 2025 by Todd Black

He’s finally here…directly to you…

For a couple of weeks now, there have been rumors about what was going on with Nintendo regarding its classic presentations. You know, the Nintendo Direct showcases? The reason that many were wondering about it was that the Switch 2 was getting set to launch, and this “period” would be the perfect time to drop one of the showcases so that they could highlight the games that fans want to know more about, while also “filling in the blanks” about what’s coming to the Switch 2 in 2025 and 2026. Many thought the Direct would come in the week of the Switch 2 launch or the week right after it. Yet, that wasn’t the case.

Like Nintendo often does, though, it revealed a new Nintendo Direct on its own time. That “time” is today, and the Direct itself is happening on Wednesday. Now, before you get all excited about “what games will be featured,” we already know the answer to that, as the presentation will be all about Donkey Kong Bananza.

Admittedly, this might be the “grand presentation” you were looking for. However, you need to look at this in another way. You see, when the Direct drops on Wednesday, we’ll be about a month away from the game’s release. Thus, Nintendo is clearly using the Direct to highlight what makes the game so special and what players have to look forward to with it.

Another thing you need to remember is that we’ve only had two good looks at the game since it was revealed. The first time was the reveal trailer for the game during the Switch 2 Direct. The second time was via gameplay videos that were shown at the Nintendo Treehouse Live events. While these were good in their own ways, they didn’t really dive into everything the game will offer or tease what Donkey Kong and his new friend, the “Odd Rock,” will face in this underground world.

Plus, fans will want to know more about the gameplay outside of the “world destruction” we’ve seen in previous video previews.

15 minutes may not seem like a lot of time, but if handled properly, it could make this game truly hyped for when it releases on July 17th. It’s fair to think that Nintendo is putting a lot behind this title, as it’s the first single-player experience by Nintendo featuring one of their iconic characters on the Switch 2. They want this to be a “bar” that all others attempt to get over, so there’s pressure to show it in the best light.
