The Day of the Devs is all about highlighting indie games, and recently, the lead curator for the event was asked about GTA 6. Fans worldwide are highly anticipating the game. However, we don’t have a confirmation date for when it will launch this year. That has a lot of other developers on their toes when it comes to their releases. But the lead curator for Day of the Devs feels that indie games won’t have to worry much about the game release.
Speaking to GamesRadar, Day of the Devs lead curator Greg Rice spoke about the upcoming Rockstar Games launch. During their conversation, he admitted that he’s heard a lot of concerns from developers about this game dropping into the marketplace and sucking all the space out. It’s clear this game will be a huge hit, and for a lot of players out there, it’s the one game that they will be playing for a while.
However, Greg also feels like this launch will be good for everyone in the industry. That’s because it will drive more consumers back into the ecosystem. It’s not the first time we’ve heard others chime in about how more players will be making the jump to this generation of console gaming because of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6. One analyst even felt that this could be the last hurrah for Xbox with the launch of this game.
100% true” that Rockstar’s game will “do gangbusters and sell millions of copies. But I think the industry is matured enough that there’s space for that and for other things as well. It’s gonna be a combination of ‘there will be games that will be successful around GTA time because they’re totally different,’ but it’ll also bring a lot more people back into the ecosystem. – Greg Rice
But beyond the drive to attract more people into the ecosystem, it’s going to present an opportunity for other developers. Outside of GTA 6, players will be looking for more games to enjoy, especially something different from their experience with GTA. So, that might drive a big economic boost for the industry and indie developers.
I’m sure there’s lots of gamers that [GTA 6 will be] the only thing they play. But “it’ll be the opportunity to get in on the new console generation and see what else is out there. So it’s definitely gonna be a big economic boost for the games industry, and will be a multiple billion dollar title, but I don’t think that it’s at competition with [indie games]. – Greg Rice
Of course, we’ll have to wait and see who decides to release their games into the marketplace around the same time as Grand Theft Auto 6. This is bound to make some development studios a little more on edge about their release timings right now as we all wait for Rockstar Games to confirm when the game will drop.
