Bigpoint has announced the development of an MMORPG based on the popular HBO fantasy series Game of Thrones.
Like the publisher's previous TV tie-in, Battlestar Galactica Online, the Game of Thrones MMO will be a free-to-play, browser based title. Development is being handheld by folks same folks as well, the Norway-based studio Artplant.
This new game is just one of several recent or upcoming adaptations of the Song of Ice and Fire universe. Last year, Cyanide released the strategy title A Game of Thrones: Genesis, and they're currently at work on a new multiplatform RPG, as well.
It's worth noting, though, that this new MMO is the first title to be licensed directly from the HBO series, rather than the George R. R. Martin books that spawned it. Exactly what difference that fact will make remains to be seen, but we're hoping it means celebrity likenesses of the show's major characters. We've been waiting for a digital Peter Dinklage far too long.
Bigpoint will be revealing more details on the game at GDC next week in San Francisco, but in the meantime, they've released a pair of screenshots to showcase what we can expect.
