Our First Look At EA Motive’s Iron Man Will Be At This Year GDC

March 10, 2025 by Ryan Parreno

They likely won’t show a lot, but they could show us something big.

EA Motive has only been letting the barest details of their Marvel’s Iron Man game come out in public. EA officially announced the game in September 2022, so it’s still in a reasonable timeframe, in the middle of the five to six year period expected of AAA game development. It’s made fans anxious if this will turn out well, but now, we’ll be getting a more extensive preview.

GDC has listed an upcoming presentation from Motive, which will feature Marvel’s Iron Man itself. Lead Technical Artist Martin Palko is Lead Technical Artist at SEED, an R&D studio in Electronic Arts that is providing support to Motive for Marvel’s Iron Man. His talk is titled Advanced Graphics Summit: Revolutionizing Texture Pipelines: EA’s Journey with Texture Sets, and it will be held this coming March 17.

GDC has provided this description of the presentation on their website:

“Art workflows have become increasingly complex, and many areas of the production pipeline have not kept pace. Textures are a prime example, where the days of a single image applied to geometry are well over. We now have intertwined surface maps packed in various channels of multiple textures, causing headaches for all involved.

EA Motive and SEED have decided to tackle this problem head-on and will present their learnings developing “Texture Sets” for Dead Space, Iron Man, and more. Texture Sets is a modern rethink of the texture pipeline, bundling sets of related textures together into a single asset, and taking a data-driven and extensible approach to texture authoring, processing, and sampling.”

Based on this description, we may also get a BTS for Motive’s 2023 remake of Dead Space as well. In fact, it’s more likely that we’ll get a more extensive post-mortem for that title, as it’s been two years since its release.

But primarily, given how long EA Motive has held back on showing us anything related to Marvel’s Iron Man, we assure Palko and EA themselves know that gamers are looking forward to seeing even just a small glance at this project.

So we do expect that we’ll see something, but since GDC is not E3, The Game Awards, a State of Play, etc., it isn’t likely to be something substantial. But then again, if we only get one screenshot that confirms that Robert Downey Junior’s likeness will be used in this game, that will already be a lot for fans.

With Marvel Rivals taking the de facto position of the Marvel franchise video game, EA Motive will have to live up to how well NetEase has catered to their players, on their own project. Maybe if we’re lucky enough, they’ll know where to find the proper inspiration.
