Former Blizzard President Says Competitors Need To Steer Away From GTA 6 Launch Window

February 14, 2025 by Dennis Patrick

Move aside. The king is here.

We can’t wait to play quite a few video games slated to launch this year. However, we already know that one behemoth of a title will be making a massive splash at launch. Rockstar Games is gearing up to release GTA 6. As a result, the former president of Blizzard took to X and alerted followers that no competition would dare ship alongside this title.

There might be more than a few AAA games coming into the marketplace near Grand Theft Auto VI, however, don’t anticipate anything immediately close to its launch. Mike Ybarra took to X and commented on an IGN article. The article focused on the launch of Borderlands 4 and how it will affect Grand Theft Auto VI. But Mike doesn’t feel like any publisher will want to release their game even close to the launch of Rockstar Games’ upcoming title.

GTA6 is the king. They don't care who announces what. Everyone will move their release out of the way whenever they announce the ship date for GTA6.

It is really the only game that has the power to do this today. https://t.co/GVYyxi7xRY

The former president of Blizzard noted that everyone will be moving their releases out of the way when Rockstar Games opts to ship GTA 6. Likewise, they feel this is the only game with the power to do this. So, it might be an easy pick-up for players, as there’s a chance there won’t be any notable AAA games released into the marketplace to compete against this title.

Furthermore, Mike went on to say that, in some ways, Borderlands 4 would be better off releasing six months or more away from Grand Theft Auto VI. Of course, it remains to be seen how many AAA games might try to launch their titles near the release of GTA 6. Unfortunately, we don’t even have a release date quite yet for the upcoming Grand Theft Auto installment outside of it coming later this year.

Borderlands 4 was highlighted during the Sony PlayStation State of Play event earlier this week. During this event, we learned that the game is set to ship into the marketplace on September 23, 2025.
