It’s a bit wild for some to think we’re already talking about the next generation of console gaming. But here we are with new speculation about what Sony, in particular, might bring into the marketplace. The latest deals with the disc drive. We’ve seen some consoles released that were all digital. Could Sony decide that the PS6 is ready to release into the marketplace without a disc drive? According to a former CEO of Sony, that’s probably not going to happen.
Shawn Layden is a former Sony chairman and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment America. He left Sony in 2019 and is now a strategy advisor at Tencent Games. Speaking with Kiwi Talkz, the former chairman was asked if the PS6 could actually arrive without a disc drive.
Of course, Shawn is not in the know now with Sony and what they are up to. However, in his mind, that’s not the right move. According to Shawn, there are several instances where players are just not able to have a solid internet connection. Whether being in a rural area in the world or just constantly on the go, an example he gives is that athletes stuck in their hotel rooms will often bring their consoles. Likewise, there are those in the military who can’t obtain an internet connection while on base.
Sony has to keep those in mind. At some point, there might be a tipping point where they can eventually focus on all digital. However, at the time being, there are far too many markets where Sony would lose out on a large player base that still relies on discs to enjoy the latest video games.
In other news for Sony fans, an industry insider claims that a PlayStation State of Event is planned this month. This has not been officially confirmed, but it’s something you could expect to happen before February wraps. Meanwhile, it was recently announced to PlayStation Plus users that this would be the last year Sony would offer free monthly PlayStation 4 games.
