Sony Drops PlayStation 30th Anniversary Video Celebratings Its Games And Players

December 2, 2024 by Todd Black

It’s About…You.

Anniversaries are something we like to celebrate quite a bit here on the site because we know that they hold a special meaning in the gaming space when done right. For example, today, in Japan at least, is the PlayStation 30th Anniversary. That’s right, it’s been 30 years since the original PlayStation console came out and wowed people with its games and graphics. There’s a lot that can be said about the OG console by Sony and all the progress that it’s made over the years, and that’s why Sony itself dropped a special video on Twitter highlighting all the various ways that PlayStation has brought gamers together.

As you’ll see in the video below, Sony and PlayStation showcased many of the franchises that have helped make the various consoles so special over the years. From OG classics like Crash Bandicoot’s titles, the two different sagas featuring Kratos, to newer games like Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last Of Us, and even all-time classics like ICO, Shadow of the Colossus, Ghost of Tsushima, and everything in between. Whether it was about family, adventure, sacrifice, courage, or something else entirely, these games, regardless of their content, brought gamers together. That’s why, at the end of the video, Sony made it clear that it was really all about…you.

It's about you.

It’s a really nice and upbeat video that shows how far PlayStation has come across its five consoles, and it should be praised for making it this far. Let’s not forget that Sony originally wasn’t going to make its own console. Instead, it had a plan to work with Nintendo, who still dominated the market at the time, and do something through them. Yet, they went out on their own when things broke down, and the rest is history.

Sony brought a lot of big innovations to the gaming space, including switching from the then-standard cartridges to the CD platform, something we still use today. Sony has also pushed graphics as a whole to new heights, even if it has tried to reach a bit too far at times with it, like charging $600 for the PS3 at launch or having the PS5 Pro launch at over $700…with key accessories adding to the price.

It’ll be the first to admit it hasn’t done everything right, but it has done plenty right, and that’s why it’s still around. Many are hoping that 2025 will be a big year for the PS5 on the gaming side of things, as gamers want it to be about “them” in the new year.
