Rumor: “Ready For Retail” Switch 2 Shell Has A Weird New Shoulder Button Gimmick

September 30, 2024 by Ryan Parreno

Well now I don’t know what implausible gimmick I want to be real.

We have a weird new rumor about the Nintendo Switch 2, that makes everything different once again.

This comes from Redditor Adjacent-Adjunct posting in the GamingLeaksAndRumours subreddit. Reddit credits this to having no other source, so for now, no one is corroborating Adjacent-Adjunct’s claims. But at the very least, they have an interesting story to tell.

The reddit starts with the title “I held a Switch 2 shell,” and Adjacent-Adjunct clarifies that he specifically got his hands on a Switch 2 that did not have any electronics in it. The item was a dummy for reference. Specifically, it looked like it was ready for retail, and it was definitely not a prototype.

Adjacent-Adjunct claims that the CAD images that leaked earlier this month no longer match what they held in his hands. So, if it was a real working model for the Switch 2 at one point, that had changed. Adjacent-Adjunct did not confirm or deny that the Switch 2 is bigger than the original Switch or not. They did say that they did not see any new ports or vent holes, so they cannot confirm if the Switch 2 will have a second USB-C port on top.

But now, we have to quote them on directly on what they say about the new gimmick they found on the Switch 2 shell:

“Now here’s the cool part, the shoulder buttons could spin! I sat there playing with it in my hands and staring at it for like 2 or 3 straight minutes before moving on, spinning these wheel-like things in my fingers because it was so strange but satisfying. It reminds me somewhat like a mouse wheel where it spins as you run your finger along it but still clicks like a button.

These also still clicked in like L and R do. Each step of the rotation made a satisfying tick feeling in your fingertips as it moved, like a mouse wheel again, but a very heavy one that takes a bit of force to make move. Otherwise they were sturdy enough to not spin when just clicking the buttons in. They weren’t like normal wheels because they were not circular shaped, they were more squared off like the current Switch shoulders shape is. Instead it felt more like a rubber material-type band that was over a track that allowed it to spin.

To help visualize, the best comparison I can think of that people see every day is somewhat like the conveyor belt at stores during checkout. I guess this lets it have that rectangular shape and not be a huge circle internally. I’m personally excited to see what Nintendo does with this!”

So we’re not sure if小宁子 XNZ and Adjacent-Adjunct are talking about the same Switch 2 anymore. If Adjacent-Adjunct’s information is correct, it would be weird that小宁子 XNZ ‘s rumors didn’t mention anything about it. But of course, it’s possible that小宁子 XNZ’s information is not updated, and the final Switch 2 we get will have all these gimmicks.

For your convenience, we’ll run down the other crazy rumored gimmicks we had already reported on the Switch 2 this year:

  • April – electromagnetic suction on the Joy-Cons
  • August – a new dock that doesn’t cover the display, and new Joy-Cons with d-pads and symmetric analog sitcks
  • September – dual screens and AI tech
  • Also September – analog sticks with multi-positional joystick tech

Now, you have to admit, even if none of these rumors turn out to be true, it’s kind of fun just thinking about all of them. But the rumors will just keep going on and on like this, until Nintendo finally caves and shows us what the Switch 2 actually is.
