New Animated Cyberpunk Project Coming to Netflix

September 20, 2024 by Carley Garcia

It’s unclear if the project marks the return of Edgerunners, or if it’s something else entirely.

During last night’s Geeked Week live event, Netflix Animation announced that a new collaboration with CD Projekt Red was underway. Fans can expect another animated project in the Cyberpunk universe, but exactly what this consists of hasn’t yet been shared. It may be an extension of Edgerunners or a new series entirely. According to Geoff Keighley, the project is a series and not a film.

CD Projekt Red and Netflix are officially teaming up for another animated series set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe.

Released on Netflix in September 2022, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners was a smash hit. The miniseries was animated by the popular Japanese animation studio Trigger and took place about one year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077.

Unsurprisingly, the success of the series boosted sales of the game, and Edgerunners was lauded with accolades, snagging Best Anime Series at the IGN Awards 2022, as well as the 7th Crunchyroll Anime Awards in 2023.

The new series doesn’t come entirely as a shock, as the company teased more animated projects during an earnings call in August.

“We are definitely planning to do more in terms of animation with Cyberpunk so I hope that’s enough as an answer,” joint CEO Michał Nowakowski told investors. “So expect to see more for sure, but that’s as far as I can go right now.”

CD Projekt Red announced that a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 was underway in October 2023. Dubbed Project Orion for now, the game is largely being developed at the CD Projekt Red’s new studio in Boston. According to Amatangelo, this was done to attract new talent unwilling to move to Europe. He also noted that Boston has a bit of a European feel, making it easier for those from the main studio to visit and work when need be.

Cyberpunk 2077 is available on PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
