Dragon Age: The Veilguard Timeline Revealed

June 17, 2024 by Carley Garcia

If you haven’t played the previous games, you have time to binge.

For longtime fans of the Dragon Age franchise, the newest mainline entry seems to be well worth the decade-long wait. Although Dragon Age: The Veilguard had a shaky reveal, the recently-released gameplay footage turned things around, and players are desperate for every little detail they can find. Thankfully, Bioware is responding to many fan inquiries, and we now know when The Veilguard will take place in the lore.

According to a Bioware Q&A session held on Discord, Dragon Age: The Veilguard will take place ten years after Dragon Age: Inquisition and 22 years after the Battle of Ostagar, or the start of Dragon Age: Origins.

This information has some fans worried, as it would mean that the Hero of Ferelden from Origins has been a Grey Warden for more than 20 years. Players of the first title will recall that the Grey Wardens go through a Joining, severely limiting their lifespan. It’s unlikely that these warriors will live another 30 years, meaning that players’ characters from the 2009 title are approaching their final days–if they’re even still alive at all.

Last week, the creator of the Dragon Age franchise David Gaider gave his thoughts on the new title’s gameplay footage. This is the first title in the series that he won’t have a hand in after leaving Bioware in 2016.

“We see some story, and tone-wise it feels a lot darker and more Dragon Age. Like I said, trailers often need to be taken with a grain of salt, and my impression is that many fans are relieved. Which is great. The environments look amazing, full stop. To see the sprawl of Minrathous – wow. I wish we could have done this for Kirkwall or even Val Royeaux. Utterly gorgeous, sells the breadth and tone, such great work.”

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be released on PC and Xbox Series X/S this fall.
