Creative Director Hugo Martin and Executive Producer Marty Stratton gave away some more details in a live stream yesterday about the Single Player content in id Software’s DOOM. They spoke about story details, weapons, upgrades, armor and more.
Martin and Stratton showed off a few levels including the Union Aerospace Corporation research base, a Lazarus facility and Titan’s Realm, a fracture of Hell. These levels are scattered throughout the single player, with them being early, mid and late game levels. This allowed Martin and Stratton to show off the Praetor Suit and arsenal upgrades.
Stratton showcases a lot of weapons in the stream and explains that each gun has a base capability and can be modded with the help of supply drones. These add boosts like Explosive Shots and Charged Bursts.
Your armor, the Praetor Suit, can of course also be upgraded. Putting more points into dexterity allows the player to perform faster Glory Kills, which are essentially executions on vulnerable enemies. Other upgrades such as environmental resistance or area-scans can “hone the gameplay to your specific preference”.
Ultra Nightmare is a new mode and the hardest difficulty setting for the new DOOM. It takes the Nightmare mode and add permanent death.
The developers also gave away some story details which revolves around the mystery of the Union Aerospace Corporation. “We don’t put story front and center at all” says Stratton. “Doom is about doing this, fighting demons, using awesome guns. It hasn’t been a huge focus necessarily, but as I mentioned, we’ve tried to infuse a lot of mystery and a story that will keep you kind of playing and digging, if you want it. We kind of say we keep it pushed out of the way a little bit and have you diving trying to figure it out”.
