Several sources have come forward to report some bad news behind the scenes for the upcoming Perfect Dark reboot.
Microsoft announced the project in The Game Awards 2020, but rumors about the game’s production were around since 2018. Rare was not involved in this reboot, and instead, Microsoft created a new game studio from scratch, called The Initiative. We’ll get back on this and other reported details on Perfect Dark’s development later, as they relate to this rumor.
As shared on Reddit by user Fidler_2K, the rumors all started with Jeff Grubb talking in the latest episode of the GiantBomb podcast. Jeff said:
“The fallout from this (today’s layoffs), been hearing more and more.. been hearing for years that Perfect Dark is in a rough state, sounds like it’s in a very rough state.
And it doesn’t sound like it’s really come together in any way since then (since the announcement) and like Crystal Dynamics coming on board to come help on that..”
Jeff then said that they aren’t even sure if Perfect Dark will be in first-person perspective.
As Jeff alluded to, Crystal Dynamics was brought in to help The Initiative in making the game. In fact, Perfect Dark had gone through a lot of internal turmoil through the past six years.
The Initiative was co-founded by Darrell Gallagher, who accepted Microsoft’s pitch for this project with him leading. Darrell left a few months before Crystal Dynamics joined the project, in 2021.
Then in 2022, several staff left the company, citing issues with the slow development and a lack of creative autonomy. Around the same time, The Initiative and Crystal Dynamics restarted development, switching from Unreal 4 to Unreal 5.
Shinobi602 then chimed in, confirming that it lines up with what he heard. VG 24/7’s Alex Donaldson, and influencer Liam Robertson then both corroborated that they had heard bad news as well. Alex says he hasn’t talked about any of it yet “out of respect for a team really trying hard to push a boulder up a steep hill.”
As topsy turvy as it sounds, after what Microsoft announced yesterday, gamers may be more likely to believe rumors and unverified information than official sources, when those official sources seem to be more likely to misrepresent or mislead.
If all these rumors are true, perhaps Microsoft should have made the call to end this project much earlier. Those developers at The Initiative may have done better work helping other Microsoft studios making their games, at least until they figure out how to get this reboot right.
This is certainly not the first time we have heard of poor management leading to a failed project from Xbox Game Studios. We want to believe Microsoft Gaming will be different, but we have yet to see it.
