Never let it be said that video game companies don’t know how to have fun with their fanbases and properties. Whether it’s Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony, each one of them has created things over the years that go beyond just “making video games” and play into the public love of other things. For Sony, they’re continuing to push the PlayStation 5 system as it’s been doing great sales-wise ever since the parts shortages ended a while back. As such, Sony decided that one of the best ways to highlight their characters and console was to become an official sponsor of the Champion’s League!
Now, it would’ve “been enough” for them to simply create a logo with their characters and the Champion’s League, but where’s the fun in stopping it there? Instead, they made a commercial where Joel and Ellie, Peter Parker and Miles Morales, Astro Bot, and even Kratos and Atreus come together to help save a soccer match and then get the crowd pumped for the event. You can watch it below.
“Ellie and Joel, from The Last of Us, race down the tunnel to deliver the match ball in time for kick off,” a description of the commercial notes before continuing with, “Astro boosts his way to the center circle to collect the referee’s coin toss. God of War’s Kratos and Atreus are leading fans with a mighty blow of the Gjallarhorn. Spider-Men Peter Parker & Miles Morales from Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 come to the rescue in Marvel’s New York, saving a jumbotron during a match’s decisive moment.”
This is hardly the first time Sony has done such a thing for their console or titles. In fact, they did something similar for the Super Bowl earlier this year! Plus, they’ve done similar-style commercials in the past for various reasons beyond soccer.
While it may seem “simple,” and the characters don’t fully “blend in” with the environment, that’s not really the point. The Last of Us, Marvel’s Spider-Man, God of War, and more are some of the best franchises that you can get on the PlayStation 5, and this commercial reminds you of what awaits should you get one. Plus, there will be more coming to the system both later this year and in the years to come.
So we say, let them play soccer! Or if they want to highlight the PS5 with other “live-action” commercials like these? Who are we to deny them?
