Pac-Man 99 Gets Shut Down and New Pac-Man Title Gets Announced!

October 10, 2023 by Todd Black

Get chompin, everybody!

Ever since the beginning of its lifetime, the Nintendo Switch Online service has had some “curious” things going on that gamers can’t quite understand. The “Expansion Pack” was one of them, although that’s gotten better in recent times, and some of the “exclusives” that you can get via the service haven’t always been worth their time. However, with Pac-Man 99 and others of the “99” kind, it was a different story. They were simple twists on classic titles that ensured that people were having fun. But now, in another curious movie, the game’s online services have been shut down, and the game has been delisted from the platform.

It’s a very odd move, and there will be gamers who are very upset about this. However, there is hope on the horizon as Bandai Namco has made an announcement about the beloved character. Knowing that the game was about to be delisted, they have revealed Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs! Yes, that’s a very long name, but let’s roll with it. The game is a battle royale-style title that up to 64 people can play, and it appears to really take Pac-Man on the ride of his life.

Here’s the official breakdown of the game:

“Pac-Man Mega Tunnel Battle: Chomp Champs brings a lot of variety and features that make playing its uniquely Pac-Man take on Battle Royale even more fun. In the game, players must eat their way through multiple interconnected mazes to become the Chomp Champ – a.k.a. the last Pac standing at the end of each match. Gain the upper hand on other players or turn the tables against Ghosts by utilizing a variety of Power Items which give Pac-Man shields, enhanced speed and more. Players can also sabotage their competition by using Power Items that help the Ghosts. Not only will they be able to chomp through Pac-Man’s regular diet of dots and the occasional fruit, but they can also chomp through other player-controlled Pac-Man characters.”

So, while Pac-Man 99 might be gone, this one can fill the void and “scratch the itch” of players should they so desire. Plus, Bandai Namco has made it so that numerous kinds of competitive modes are available to you all. There are even customization options so that your version of Pac-Man can stand out from the crowd.

If you need more insight into how the game will look and feel, you can check out the reveal trailer below:
