Ed Boon Teases More Mortal Kombat News!

May 17, 2023 by Todd Black

Koming Soon?

Mortal Kombat fans have been waiting for a big announcement for over a year now regarding the next gaming title in the franchise. Last year was the series’ 30th anniversary, and many felt something might be announced there. Sadly, that wasn’t the case. However, there were plenty of things to fill the void, including many looks back at the series through videos, tweets, and more. Plus, another animated movie came out in 2022 to help pass the time. But recently, big developments and teases have indicated the next game would be announced soon, and another such tease has dropped.

Not surprisingly, that tease came from none other than Ed Boon. The co-creator of the franchise has been dropping many morsels of information over the last several months, and his latest one from last night indicates that we’re due for something big very soon:

It’s unclear what he and the team at NetherRealm Studios will be dropping, but based on the escalation of things, it could be the trailer for the next Mortal Kombat game. If you recall, the next game in the line was announced at a Warner Bros Discovery financial meeting and was confirmed for this year. Then, the team did a thank you video for playing their games for so long and dropped a teaser for the upcoming title. Then, a little while later, another teaser came out, implying that the franchise would be undergoing yet another reboot.

So based on that line of progression, it would make sense that a full-on trailer to reveal the game would be next. But, of course, we can’t say that for sure, so you best hedge your bets and manage your expectations.

A reboot is such a curious thing to do because the franchise’s last reboot was three games ago. After years of wallowing in mediocre titles and convoluted lore, NetherRealm Studios came together to take things back to the beginning. They even had an in-canon event where Shao Khan was able to get the powers of Armageddon, and Raiden had to reverse time and start from the beginning to ensure that his brother didn’t win. Fast forward a few games and the story progressed in new and exciting ways, including bringing in the overseer of time itself to meld past and present together.

So if there is a reboot on the way, they would need to justify why it’s happening so soon after the last one. Only time, and NetherRealm Studios, will tell.
