Riot Games Comes Out Against SOPA and PIPA

January 11, 2012 by Josh Harmon

The League of Legends developer has become the largest gaming company to publicaly oppose the bills.

League of Legends developer Riot Games has posted a statment on their official forums decrying SOPA and PIPA, the controversial anti-piracy bills currently under consideration by the US Congress.

"We’re not usually inclined to comment on politics," the statement begins. "We’re a game company, and making games is just a whole lot more fun. But there is legislation under consideration today by the United States Congress that gives us serious concern."

The post then goes onto explain the various ways the bill would harm League of Legends players, from killing the livestreaming community to threatening the continued existence of their forums and in-game chat. In addition, Riot says the propsed bills "raise serious constitutional free speech issues, and could even compromise the basic security infrastructure of the internet."

To help explain their position, Riot's corporate attorney is currently participating in a question and answer session on Reddit's popular IAmA section.
