The Pokemon Company Celebrates Having 1008 Pokemon To Catch

January 12, 2023 by Todd Black

That’s a lot to catch…

When it comes to a phenomenon, you often don’t see them coming. They’ll typically happen without much fanfare and expectation at first. However, when you put this under the lens of video games, you’ll see this quite a bit. No one expected Nintendo to be the start of the next generation of video games that lasted decades. No one expected Sony to be the next “true rival” in the console wars. No one expected Xbox to bring online gameplay to the masses, and so on. For The Pokemon Company, no one expected their handheld RPG series to be such a monster hit. Yet that’s exactly what it became.

Because from Pokemon Red/Blue/ Yellow to Pokemon Scarlet and Violet, we’ve now had nine generations of Pokemon, Pokemon battles, quests to become the “very best,” and so on. Every generation has its peaks and valleys, and many fans differ on the best generation. But one thing that is absolute thanks to Gen 9 is the number count.

Number count for what? The number count for the entire Pokemon species that we have currently. Thanks to Gen 9, we have 1008 Pokemon. That’s a far cry from the original 151 we started with over 26 years ago.

In tribute to that, The Pokemon Company released a video highlighting all 1008 Pokemon you can capture across the various games and platforms. It’s a simple yet touching tribute to show off just how diverse the Poke-world is and the unique creatures that they’ve made.

They break down the video by Pokemon type or showing off the starters in each region before finally ending things in Paldea, where we see that Miraidon and Koraidon are the final numbers in the current Pokemon. Truly a legendary finish.

It’s fair to say that not every Pokemon design has been a winner. For example, Gen 5 is widely bashed for its “uncreative” designs. Don’t forget; there’s a set of “trash Pokemon” because of that generation. But in all fairness, every Pokemon generation has its “lame ducks,” and its “epic catches.”

But there are common threads that go throughout each generation. Such as having multiple levels of legendary Pokemon. Or the Pokemon that stand out as “icons” like Lucario.

The only question we really ask is, “how many more can they reasonably make?” Well, considering no one expected them to make over 1000 Pokemon, the sky is truly the limit should they want.
