God of War Ragnarok Officially Becomes Fastest-Selling First Party Launch Title In PlayStation History

November 23, 2022 by Dennis Patrick

It’s a new record.

God of War is a massive franchise, and it shouldn’t be shocking that a ton of players were going to dive into the latest installment. However, it might be surprising to find out how many players jumped on this game at launch. It looks like there were so many purchases for this title that God of War Ragnarok has managed to hit a new record for PlayStation. According to the official PlayStation Twitter account, it would seem that Sony’s Santa Monica Studios managed to deliver the fastest-selling first-party launch game in PlayStation history.

The folks over at PlayStation alerted their followers that God of War Ragnarok has sold over 5.1 million copies within its debut week. That is a massive number, and it’s actually the fastest-selling first-party launch title to hit the marketplace. So things are looking up for Sony with this latest installment. Players who might not have picked up the game previously could be swayed to check it out after seeing this installment’s immense success within the debut week.

Congratulations to @SonySantaMonica for making God of War Ragnarök the fastest-selling first party launch game in PlayStation history! 🪓 pic.twitter.com/NPgN6YHRnQ

For those who haven’t been keeping ties with God of War Ragnarok, this installment takes place after the events of the 2018 release of God of War. Here we’ll follow both Kratos and Atreus as they embark on another journey surrounding the Ragnarok prophecy. But we’ll refrain from spoiling anything from the narrative for those of you who have yet to play through the campaign. As for those of you who have already completed the game, don’t hold your breath on seeing a potential DLC release.

Recently the game director behind God of War Ragnarok, Eric Williams, was featured on an episode of Kinda Funny Games. It was here that the conversation turned into questioning the future of God of War Ragnarok. More specifically, the hosts asked if we could potentially see DLC or expansions to further add content to the game. Unfortunately, at the moment, Eric Williams doesn’t foresee any DLC hitting the game as the team put everything they had into the story. So we’re not sure just what the future might hold for the IP, but it looks like if we see another chapter, then it might be in the form of a brand-new installment.

Currently, God of War Ragnarok has been released into the marketplace for both Sony’s PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 console platforms. You can even view our Before You Buy game coverage in the video embedded below.
