Is Kid Icarus: Uprising Coming To Nintendo Switch?

November 23, 2022 by Todd Black

And is he still sorry for keeping us waiting?

To those that don’t know the full scope of Nintendo history, it might surprise you that in the early days of Nintendo systems, one of their biggest franchise was the Kid Icarus series. It’s true. At one time, they were very popular games, and the main character of Pit even had cameos in games like Mario Kart. However, for one reason or another, the series fell away from Nintendo, and they didn’t use it again. That is, until Pit arrived in Super Smash Bros Brawl, which sparked a new interest in the series and led to Kid Icarus: Uprising being born on the Nintendo 3DS.

The game served as a revitalization of the series while also continuing the story from the past games. They even did a bunch of references to the past titles via very meta moments. The game was successful on the 3DS and sold over 1 million units. Many felt this would be the start of many games starring Pit, but that didn’t happen. So outside of future Smash Bros appearances, Pit didn’t get another game.

However, things might be changing. The man behind Kid Icarus: Uprising, Masahiro Sakurai, has posted another video in his “Creating Games” series, and in it was this line:

Is Sakurai teasing a Kid Icarus: Uprising port in his latest video or is he throwing shade that out of all the games Nintendo has ported to Switch, they haven't done his yet?

Some might take this as Sakurai “making a joke” about game development. But he’s never done anything like that in past videos. He’s never “wished for a game” to be born or ported. Plus, he was the man who made the 3DS game, so why would he ask ‘someone’ to port it, given that he has a team that could port it if they wanted to?

In other words, it’s an odd joke to make, especially given that the Switch is legendary for all the ports from past systems that it’s had. Many people suspected that after Super Smash Bros Ultimate that Sakurai would return to the Kid Icarus series, but no confirmation has ever been given on that.

Many fans would welcome either a port or a new game in the series, as it would flesh out the Switch’s library even further. The system has done very well by bringing in as many 1st party IPs to the Switch as possible from their library, but the return of Pit hasn’t happened yet in a new game or a port.

So was it a simple joke from Sakurai? Or was it a tease of a new announcement? We’ll have to wait and see.
