The video game landscape is rife with high fantasy settings and worlds populated by elves and orcs, but science fiction-themed games have made a strong showing for themselves too. The Technomancer is one such game, and a new trailer released today from Focus Home Interactive, shows that the developer is certainly trying to put its best foot forward when it comes to showing off the goods.
The Technomancer takes place on a colonial Mars in the moderate future, but it’s a very different looking world than the pristine red land of possibility we view it as from the comfort of 2016 idealism. The Mars of The Technomancer is a dusty backwater populated by rough-looking bandits, dangerous cutthroats and massive, weird-looking aliens that to be honest I kind of find it hard to believe we’ve been missing all this time.
According to a press release from Focus and developer Spiders, The Technomancer is set hundreds of years after the initial Mars colonization, and shortly after a massive global cataclysm that has devastated the Red Planet’s population and cut it off from Earth. The resulting chaos has plunged what should be mankind’s greatest achievement into a state of near-perpetual lawlessness and unrest, with the plot of the game centering on corrupt police and closely guarded secrets.
In addition to showing off Spiders’ unique take on the Red Planet, the trailer also showcases some of the game’s other unique aesthetic twists; an intriguing mashup of epic science fiction and classic rustic westernism.
The Technomancer is set to release later this year on PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
