The Super Mario Bros Movie Gets PG Rating

October 19, 2022 by Todd Black

Let’s go…PG!

The rating system that applies to things like movies, TV shows, and video games is essential for entertainment. The label might not matter to some of you, but for others, it is a guideline that people can look at and see what they’re getting into. For example, if a video game has a lot of violence and gore, the M-Rating that details the carnage will show they should stay away. Or, if a parent wants to see if their kids’ “most-desired game” is something they should get, seeing an E10+ rating will help put them at ease. With the Super Mario Bros Movie, fans can easily guess what rating it got.

If you said, “G For General Audiences,” you’d be wrong. Instead, the game got a PG rating from the Motion Picture Association. If that surprises you, you should know that the reason for this is because it has “action and mild violence.”

The Mario games have a lot of action, so that shouldn’t be too shocking. The violence is never “over the top” or graphically detailed to an extent, but it is action. Plus, since we’re seeing this in a moving setting, they might ramp things up a little bit to show more of the impact Mario has when he’s stomping on Goombas and Koopas.

The trailer alone showed intense action when Bowser single-handedly brought down an ice castle with his flaming breath. It was an excellent shot, and more displays of power from Bowser can be expected. No matter what action we see, this film will still be one that families can watch together. The team at Illumination made the movie alongside Nintendo, and their Minions movies were all PG. That should give you an indicator as to what is going to happen with the Super Mario Bros Movie.

It’s honestly a little shocking that it’s been about two weeks since the debut trailer for the film came out. People are still talking about it for one reason or another. Primarily, the reason is that they are still worried about the voice acting of Chris Pratt. The internet was not kind when the trailer came out, and Chris Pratt sounded like himself instead of the “updated” voice he promised fans.

The other characters, at least for now, sound fine. Jack Black as Bowser, for example, got rave reviews from fans, who are already saying he will carry the film. But, of course, considering the pedigree of Jack Black when it comes to voice acting, that’s not an unfair thing to predict.

As for when we’ll get the next update on the film, it likely won’t be for a few months. The movie will release on April 7, 2022, so we will probably have another month or two before another trailer comes out.
