GTA 6 May Still Be Years Away from Release

September 27, 2022 by Todd Black

Not impacted, but not on the fast track either.

GTA 6 dominated the headlines the moment that its leak came out. Said leak was from a hacker who broke into Rockstar Games servers and dropped a bunch of videos of the game’s current state. It opened many gamer’s eyes and made people question what was the situation was over at Rockstar Games. One of the biggest questions to come out of the scandal was whether the game would be delayed due to the leak. The answer to that was thankfully no, but now, a new report reveals that this doesn’t mean the game will come out soon either. The next Grand Theft Auto title might still be years away from releaser.

The report comes from another leaker, ironically enough–this time, a more reliable one via Adrien Perea. If you don’t know Adrien, they have been known for accurately reporting all sorts of news in the past, including certain delays, key updates, and so on. In regards to GTA 6, he said that the game would release in 2025 at the earliest, and it was a “no-brainer” to think that.

So, are we to believe this? Looking at this from a game design standpoint, it would make sense that the game is still a few years away from release based solely on what we know about the title’s timeline. By that, we mean how the previous title GTA 5 was not only kept alive a lot longer than some fans would’ve liked but the sixth title was only confirmed in any meaningful way earlier this year. Another issue here is the leak. The 90 videos and screenshots that were posted on the internet showed a build that was still very young in its development, especially graphics-wise with visuals that many people called out for the wrong reasons. Polish takes time, and we don’t know the point in the development timeline when these videos were made.

Another issue here is content. Grand Theft Auto titles are known for big stories and massive worlds. The open-world gameplay element has been a hallmark of the series since San Andreas, so even if the world is theoretically built right now–and there’s no proof of that currently–filling it up with content will take time. But wait, there’s more. Don’t forget that the fifth entry of the game had online content as well, so if the team is hoping to completely recreate that for GTA 6, that will take added time.

When you add all of these elements together, you get a good glimpse at what game development is like and how long it takes to get things done. So while the game might not be delayed, it might still have years of development before we see it finished and on store shelves.
