Masahiro Sakurai’s Smash Bros Screenshots Have Ended

August 23, 2022 by Todd Black

But something new might take their place.

If you were to ask who the face of the Super Smash Bros franchise is, that would be Masahiro Sakurai. For years, he has been welcoming people to the franchise, talking about new characters, and breaking down those characters in special videos highlighting how they play. He’s gone above and beyond to connect with fans of the franchise and Nintendo as a whole. This includes what he has been doing on his Twitter feed for years now.

At the end of the main development period of Super Smash Bros Ultimate, Sakurai took a bunch of screenshots within the game itself, including shots of the characters, stages, fights, and other unique moments that would really cool in photo form. By his own admission, he took a ton of these pictures, posting them online whenever he could. Sadly, in his latest tweet from late last night, he announced that his time with these posts was done.

This concludes the daily Smash Ultimate screens I've been posting since Dec. 2019.
Thank you for your support! #SmashBros

However…I've been thinking about starting something new. (This time it won't be daily, though.)

While it is the end of an era, Sakurai notes that he’s up for doing something new. Given that his past posts have been tied to the game, it would make sense that he still wants to do something within the universe of the title. Masahiro Sakurai is known for creativity and he’s a bit of a crowd pleaser, so while his new idea may not be Earth-shattering, it will probably be something incredibly fun.

Fans are still curious about the future of the Super Smash Bros franchise as a whole. There are a lot of questions up in the air, and Sakurai did note that if there was another title to be made, it couldn’t possibly be as big as Ultimate, which had the biggest roster in the franchise to date.

There is also the question of whether Sakurai himself would even be a part of the game’s development. In a past post, he noted that he had tried to pass off production of the game to another company, but that it was a disaster, so he came back. Will he be willing to risk that again? His health has long been a topic of discussion, as he has pushed himself hard over the years to make these games.

Only he knows the answer, but hopefully we’ll be seeing more from Sakurai soon enough.
