James Gunn is easily one of the most popular filmmakers (and now TV makers) in the world right now, and everyone can agree that while he did things beforehand to earn his stripes, it was doing the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise that really shot him into the stratosphere. No one expected the first movie to be as good as it was, yet it was, and set a ripple effect through the MCU and beyond for him. This eventually led him to doing The Suicide Squad movie and then the Peacemaker spinoff. But now, he’s back at Marvel Studios and helped make various things once again, including the Holiday Special that’ll arrive later this year and the highly-anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.3.
Its first footage was shown at San Diego Comic-Con over the weekend, and fans have been asking questions of Gunn ever since. Not the least of which has to do with Thor Love and Thunder. If you recall, the GOTG showed up there briefly at the beginning (as they had made Thor part of the Ravagers after Avengers Endgame), and some wondered if their “cameo” affected Gunn’s writing of the movie:
“No, I wrote the script without ever thinking they were ever going to be with Thor,” Gunn noted in an interview. “It hasn’t affected them at all (laughs).”
To be blunt, that’s perfectly fine and acceptable. Their role in Love and Thunder was small and honestly pointless. What’s more, you could argue that time has passed since that point so it wouldn’t need to be mentioned in the script at all. James Gun already noted that Thor wouldn’t be in his film, so this just reinforces that.
What you can expect though is an emotional goodbye, as this film will bet he end of Gunn’s run with the team, and the end of the “Guardians Era” as he called it.
