After a long time of teasing and waiting, Thor Love and Thunder has finally debuted in theaters, and the results (for the most part…) speak for themselves. Because in terms of box office totals, it did really well. In fact, it did better than Thor Ragnarok by a decent margin. Reports state that the film made about $143 million domestically, and over $300 million globally, a very nice opening, and easily one of the biggest openings in all of 2022 so far (behind only Jurassic World: Dominion and Doctor Strange In the Multiverse Of Madness).
This is good news for Marvel Studios as well because as we would come to find out, Thor Love and Thunder had one of the biggest budgets of any MCU film so far in $250 million, and that’s before you throw in things like the market campaigns and such. So they are going to make profit…but whether they truly make fans is up for debate.
Because while the film was a success in terms of money, it wasn’t a success in making both fans and critics happy in a way that Ragnarok seemed to. The Rotten Tomatoes score for example has gone downer and downer ever since reviews started to come out. And if you look at the social media posts online, many are ranging from “one of the best ever” for the MCU to “this is the worst MCU movie”. With just as many saying it was “ok” and nothing more.
Certain statements by Taika Waititi about the movie and other movies have also gotten many fans to question whether he should be allowed back for a fifth Thor film if one is to be greenlit.
What’s going to be telling is how the movie does in its second weekend, a big drop is expected, but how big? We’ll find out.
