Still thinking about Rise of the Tomb Raider’s sales numbers? Microsoft just put out a new trailer that might just distract you from that.
Square Enix has released the first look trailer for Rise of the Tomb Raider expansion Baba Yaga: Temple of the Witch, which takes Lara’s adventures into a gothic horror direction.
Continuing from the ending of the main game, Lara seems to be chasing after her father and his lifelong quest, drawing her into deep dark woods filled with unreal and ferocious beasts. Of course, it seems she’s set for a showdown with Baba Yaga herself.
Who is Baba Yaga? In Slavic folklore, she is an incredibly powerful supernatural being, with many contradictions. Her stories have her flying in a mortar and wielding a pestle, and living in the forest in a hut that stands on chicken legs. Depending on the stories you read, she can be a motherly divinity associated with the forest, or a vicious monster that causes misery for everyone around her.
Eidos took this very memorable figure and seems to have added a shaman spin to her. This deviates wildly from traditional depictions of her as a hugely deformed woman, but also hints that behind her seeming supernatural, dreamlike powers, is a more grounded, and very real, threat.
Baba Yaga: Temple of the Witch will be releasing on Xbox in early 2016. Watch the reveal trailer above.
