How many of you out there want to make comic books? There are now scores of places online that will not only allow you to publish your works, but help you get eyes on it. Webtoon has become popular with both mainline and indie publishers, and while the format is a bit more restrictive in terms of panel sizes, that hasn’t slowed creators from using the service. With over 72 million subscribers, Webtoon has even begun turning some of its comics into TV shows and movies.
A recent ad for Webtoon posted in a subway tunnel found its way online and was met with instant rage from the social media masses. In it, they define comics as “Literature’s Fun Side-Hustle.”
Yes, making comics can be a hobby, but for many, it’s a full-time profession. Even those who treat comic creation as a hobby put everything they have into it, so hearing it be referred to as a “side hustle” detracts from the effort and love that poured into these stories.
Others noted how this was one of many ads by Webtoon stating that comics “aren’t mainline media,” showing the lack of respect comic creators get in the world at large.

As you can see above, the company did issue an apology on this matter. This only came after a large number of creators from all walks of comic life blasted the advertisement.
