Progression of character is something that every show (that is worth its salt) tries to do, and in meaningful ways. Because if you don’t grow, evolve, and so on, you stay stagnant. And that goes double for superhero stories, as people WANT to see their characters grow in meaningful ways as they do their superhero thing. And that brings us to Ms. Marvel.
The story of Kamala Khan in the comics is one of self-discovery and being more than “just another superhero” and according to the directors of the upcoming Disney+ series, they want to show that with Kamala, and hope others do as she goes into the larger MCU.
“In the same way you see Tom Holland as Peter Parker evolve… that’s the bar, basically,” El Arbi explained. “For us, personally, it’s a masterpiece of a movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home. The bar is now so high. It just inspires us and also the other people involved in Ms. Marvel, to be like, ‘What can we do to try to reach that goal one day?'”
Series star Iman Vellani also noted the show’s tone may feel cheesy, but it’s all part of Kamala’s journey.
“We are self-aware of how cheesy the show gets sometimes, but when you are growing up everything is so heightened – your emotions, crushes, friendships – it all feels so new,” she reflected. “Minor inconveniences also feel like the end of the world. We hold onto that feeling of when you are a kid just wanting to grow up. And when you are a teenager you think you know everything but you don’t as you haven’t lived yet. We really lean into that.”
This is all appropriate because of how Ms. Marvel won’t just be in a Disney+ show, but the upcoming movie The Marvels alongside the characters “idol” in Captain Marvel. So hopefully her progression will grow there as well.
As for the series, that starts on June 8th.
