Kingdom Hearts 3 director Tetsuya Nomura has a new interview out, talking about changing the game’s engine, defining the battle system, and the number of playable characters.
The changes the Kingdom Hearts team had to undergo in switching to Unreal were the cause of the delay in sharing new details since it was announced. They started from scratch, recreating key effects in the engine, and moving their new shader over to Unreal as well.
The team went through the different battle systems the spinoffs had alongside the main games to figure out what it would be like for Kingdom Hearts 3. Nomura says learning from making new systems, more than improving tech, enabled him to improve the battle system.
Sora will have new and unique moves, including the Keyblade Transformation, which is actually part of the combat and the story conceit.
Finally, as a small tease, Nomura stated that the number of playable characters is a secret for now, but also pointing out that their nondisclosure is an indication that they are hiding something to reveal later.
Nomura may merely be keeping reveals for upcoming Disney worlds in the future, as it may include both the Marvel and Star Wars universes.
However, I would posit that something else could be something that make sense on the hardware the game is planned for: online multiplayer, tied down to selectable side characters.
