PlayStation VR, which was known as Project Morpheus until Sony's Tokyo Game Show press conference earlier this week, will reportedly cost the same as a new console.
Bloomberg says they received word of what to expect directly from PlayStation CEO Andrew House, who declined to offer a precise figure but said PlayStation VR would be priced as a new gaming system.
The system is expected to go on sale in the first half of 2016 and Sony plans to have more than 10 games ready for the device when it launches.
Sony released the PS4 two years ago for $400 while the PS3 launched in 2006 for $600. It seems likely that PlayStation VR will be closer to the $400 price range than $600 but that remains to be seen.
In August last year Sony said the system would be "affordable". The company's Anton Mikhailov commented at the time, “We wouldn’t be doing this if we didn’t know that we could make this for an affordable price. Obviously, there’s a wide range of what people consider affordable, but this is going to be a consumer-grade device."
Rival VR headset Oculus Rift is currently listed for $350 and there's the admittedly unlikely possibility that House was referring to handhelds. A PS Vita can be picked up for less than $200. We will of course bring you the official price as soon as Sony announces it.
