Today Frictional Games has released another trailer illustrating key visual aspects of their upcoming horror game SOMA, this time giving us that oh so brief glimpse of terror so signature of their style.
As far as SOMA footage goes, this trailer seems to give us one of the best looks yet at what the gameplay will be like in context. It doesn't take long while watching the video to feel that famliar sense of creeping, paralyzing dread that made Penumbra and Amnesia so titillating. Over at the PlayStation blog, the devs go a little more into detail about the enemies the player will encounter in SOMA. Unlike previous Frictional games or other horror titles, the creatures you run into will have varying degrees of hostility depending on their temperment or mood, and their volatile and unpredictable nature will be a factor in figuring out how to navigate around them. They will also vary in their trigger factors, from monsters that will respond to eye contact, to others that only become agitated by sound or movement speed, and so forth. Each are also used sparingly so as to avoid stale repetition. The lack of health bar will also keep their potential damage ambiguous, adding another aspect of unpredictability to factor into each scenario.
SOMA debuts on PlayStation 4 and PC on September 22, 2015.
