The two Super Mario Galaxy titles remain some of the more popular entries in the Mario franchise. The first two games were a total hit with gamers and Nintendo's Shigeru Miyamoto says that a third game is a possibility.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Miyamoto said that he and Yoshiaki Koizumi, the director of Galaxy, are "looking to challenge Galaxy and do another 3D action title."
He said that the opportunity to create such a game would depend on the hardware technology, hinting that the company might be waiting to further develop the Nintendo NX before pursuing development of the game. The advancement of technology would cut down on the team's need to spend a lot of time on performance optimization.
"Wii U's definitely good enough in terms of hardware performance, it is more the workload of the team. If you look at Star Fox Zero, the TV and GamePad are both rendered in 60 frames, so in total that's 120 frames. It's really just a matter of the CPU speed at this point."
Elsewhere in the interview, Miyamoto talked about Nintendo's reasons for focusing on 2D Super Mario Bros. games. He also addressed fan criticism of the new Metroid and Animal Crossing games.
