Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 6 has been confirmed for Nintendo 3DS.
Famitsu has revealed that this latest iteration of the Phoenix Wright series will be produced by Eshiro Motohide and directed by Takeshi Yamazaki. It will have a system that will allow you to play it faster, but most importantly, Capcom already has a demo ready for this month’s Tokyo Game Show.
As of December 2013, the Ace Attorney series has sold over 5 million units, and Capcom has remarked that they were surprised by how popular the series had proven in the US. The series is already over a decade old, having started as Gyakuten Saiban on the Game Boy Advance in 2001.
Of course, the West would have to wait for the DS before they would get the game, but it went on to become one of the system’s lynchpin franchises.
The latest game was a prequel that went back to the Meiji era, and Capcom deliberately made it different from the main series. Of course, we expect this to be the game’s return to form.
While Shu Takumi is often named as the mastermind behind Ace Attorney, the IP isn’t entirely the purview of one auteur like Western IPs are. Yamazaki and Eshiro have all also been involved with the series deeply. Eshiro was producer for the spinoff games like Dual Destinies, while Yamazaki was closely involved in planning the games with Takumi from the onset. Takumi and Eshiro both headed work on Dual Destinies, so fans of that game may expect a familiar feel.
Update: Capcom has officially confirmed that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney 6 is coming to the West. They shared this statement:
Ace Attorney 6 (working title) will be coming to the west. We’ll have more information on the Western release soon.
