We’re currently about three weeks away from a 6-part limited series event that everyone is chomping at the bit to see. And of course, we speak of the arrival of the Obi-Wan Kenobi series that will once again feature Ewan McGregor in the role of the Jedi Master. Many fans were hoping that McGregor would return because almost all can agree he played the legendary Jedi well in the prequel films.
But while he may have been a “natural” in the role, it has been some time since the role happened, so by his own admission, he rewatched the entire Star Wars Skywalker Saga to get into the right mindset:
“I watched all of them to prepare for this because the last one I did, we shot Episode III in Sydney, Australia in 2003, I think. So it’s been quite some time — almost 20 years,” McGregor said
Ironically, that difference is what helped “age him” enough to do this role in a believable fashion.
“It was such a huge thing to happen,” he recalled of first getting the role. “So to go back and watch that movie again was really great fun.”
He also notes how things have changed in terms of perception with the films:
“It was tricky at the time. They weren’t overwhelmingly embraced by everybody when they came out, our prequels,” he said. “It was nice to watch them now knowing that people love them. That the kids who we made them for at the time — they loved those films a lot. It was nice to watch them with that sense.”
It’s true, the prequels for the most part are seen in a better light now than they were then. Especially thanks to the divisive nature of the Sequel Trilogy.
Hopefully the Obi-Wan series will be universally praised so that Ewan McGregor can “retire” the Star Wars role with pride and joy.
