Tomonobu Itagaki has finally responded to the influx of reviews for Devil’s Third.
Amid clearly negative critical reception, Itagaki thanks everyone for playing. He expressed his belief that gamers who played the game are satisfied with it. I think he bases this on the people who send him messages on Facebook or his page that express their happiness with it.
Now, regarding the reviews, he does not mince words that they are ‘pretty awful.’ This time, he is clear in pointing out that some of the criticism is fair and constructive. He is also clear about valuing feedback, and hoping that fans will give him more.
However, he still believes part of the poor reception is because reviewers still did not get a chance to evaluate the game properly. In specific, he noted that some reviews of the multiplayer component were made in a closed environment, the same argumentDestiny reviewers made for delaying their reviews or review scores. Many, but not all, reviewers gave Devil’s Third the benefit of the doubt and delayed their reviews for this reason as well, such as NintendoLife.
Ultimately, Itagaki wants to keep communication open, so he encourages everyone to keep sharing feedback.
As of now, Devil’s Third’s Metacritic stands at a dismal 41, with 12 bad review of a total 22 reviews. User reviews, however, swung at the opposite end of the spectrum, with 9 positive reviews out of a total of 12 reviews, so Itagaki may have done his homework regarding gamer vs reviewer reception after all.
