There’s always a sense of anticipation when a comic book movie is about to come out. Mainly because you can hype a movie a lot via the trailer, the cast in the film, certain teases about the plot, and so on. But then when the movie comes out, and you read reviews about it, or you hear word of mouth about it, it can very much make you have feelings about the film before you even see it. Even making you wonder if you want to see it at all. Case in point, Morbius, a long-delayed film that has now gotten its review embargo lifted…and the results aren’t good.
We say that because the reviews for the film have NOT been kind by any metric. Not the least of which is that of the fact that Rotten Tomatoes has it at a whopping 16% based on 45+ reviews from critics. Yes, sometimes critics aren’t the best guide to look at when it comes to comic book movies, but, there are dedicated comic book site people who noted that Morbius “scrapped the bottom of the barrel” and was a “lowest common denominator” in regards to how cheap and bad this film is.
That’s not a good thing to say, at all, and yet a lot of fans have also gotten in on this action and made tweets mocking the film. Including how many people have said for one reason or another that it is their “most anticipated film of the year” and yet…it’s gotten this bad of reviews.
Box office projections have it at about 40 million domestically in its first weekend. Which isn’t bad in context per se, but, one has to wonder if that will hold up now that the reviews are pooring in.
Needless to say, we’d be shocked if it got a sequel.
