Star Wars Battlefront will have playable women Stormtroopers, developer DICE has confirmed to Polygon.
Asked if there will be women Stormtroopers in the game, DICE general manager Patrick Bach replied, "Why wouldn't there be?"
He explained, "When you talk to Lucasfilm, they're like, 'Yeah, of course there are. We just haven't shown you [in the films]'". For us, it's about filling in the details in the universe. We help out by asking the question, 'Can we do this, can we do that? Should we do this or do that?' And then we work it out [with Lucasfilm]."
Stormtroopers in the movies have primarily been men, so far as we know, but it has been confirmed that Star Wars: The Force Awakens will feature a woman Stormtrooper. Some fans believe the black armoured Stormtrooper featured at the 1:20 mark in the second teaser trailer (above) for The Force Awakens is Gwendoline Christie of Game of Thrones fame.
Women have also served the Galactic Empire in various books as well as the Force Unleashed video games and elsewhere in the expanded universe. Despite the fact that much of the EU is no longer canon, it seems Lucasfilm and EA are committed to ensuring women are just as prevelant in representing the Dark Side as men in their official lore.
EA revealed Battlefront's debut trailer earlier today. The game will be released for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One on November 17th.
