Movie company Lionsgate has announced a "significant investment" in Game of Thrones and The Walking Dead developer Telltale Games.
Lionsgate declared its plans to enter the video game market last year, and while the size of the investment has not been disclosed, it's large enough to warrent the appointment of Loinsgate CEO Jon Feltheimer to Telltale's board of directors. John Riccitiello, Unity CEO and former EA CEO, has also been appointed to the developer's board.
No projects were announced, but Lionsgate says the investment will yield both original games and licensed titles.
“The investment will continue the extension of Lionsgate's film and television brands into the game space and will bring Lionsgate's expertise in creating and marketing premium content to Telltale's unique narrative-driven, storytelling approach to gaming,” Lionsgate commented. “The collaboration will also enable the two companies to explore opportunities to co-develop existing and original IP into episodic games and television.”
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Telltale CEO Kevin Bruner commented that they have a "super show" planned. They aim to integrate a single story across game and television segments, though game episodes will be spread further apart than TV episodes due to development cycles.
Telltale also says they're aiming for predictable release schedules, which hasn't always been the case for the game's IPs, and the first such project will be an original IP.
The studio is currently working on Game of Thrones, story-based Minecraft game, and other projects.
