Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric: Sample Clip of Recent Patch in Action

January 28, 2015 by Tony Ponce

Updated textures and lighting in this cutscene are a mixed bag.

The European version of Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric recently received a 1GB patch. The following day, the patch found its way onto North American consoles. Among the changes in the patch are added invisible boundaries to prevent phasing through walls and the removal of Knuckles' infinite jump glitch. Yet, as the infamous idiom goes, you can polish a turd, but it's still a turd.

Take for example the above cutscene that demonstrates some of the texture and lighting "improvements" that the patch introduced. In some ways, the scene looks better, while in others, it looks worse. Look at Eggman's shadow on the mountain when he's being blown away! And check out all that added bloom!

As I said before, there's nothing that can save this game. But it's fun to watch developer Big Red Button try!
