Over the weekend, the European version of the critically blasted Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric for Wii U received a rather hefty 1GB patch. Quite appropriately, neither publisher Sega nor developer Big Red Button Entertainment provided patch notes upon release. It was up to the fans to discover what was changed.
Sonic Stadium has a list of what people have noticed thus far. The most notable fix is that the infamous Knuckles infinite jump glitch has been squashed. A few additional invisible barriers have also been added throughout the world to prevent phasing through walls and falling into nothingness. Other changes are comparably minor — they include adjustments to framerate, lighting, and shadows. All in all, it doesn't feel like a gigabyte's worth of improvements.
The patch hasn't arrived in North America yet, but let's be real: A simple patch cannot even begin to solve this game's problems. I played through this garbage for review with another outlet, and I'm not being hyperbolic when I say that Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric is among the worst commercially released games of 2014. But hey, if this patch can help you eke out some measure of enjoyment, more power to you.
