The solicitations for the Batman: Arkham Knight comics seem to drop hints at what could be coming up for the game. I have a theory that connects the comics between the upcoming game and the last Batman: Arkham City DLC, Harley Quinn’s Revenge..
Here’s the verbatim text from the solicitations:
Shipping twice in April! In issue 2, will the Clown Prince of Crime have the last laugh from inside the grave? Find out when Harley Quinn is Batman’s only hope to save Commissioner Gordon from the Joker’s Last Will and Testament!
In issue 3, the Arkham Knight’s shadow spreads across the city as Batman digs deeper into the murders of villains – and it will soon put him on a collision course with the most dangerous enemy he’s ever faced! All this and more as the stunning prelude to the highly anticipated video game continues!
Based on the Issue 2 synopsis, it seems that Bruce and Gordon may be owing Harley Quinn a favor, a surprising subplot that could lead to a plot twist in the game. (Spoilers for Harley Quinn’s Revenge follow below.)
If you remember, there is a huge gaping hole in Arkhamverse Harley Quinn’s story. The end of the Harley Quinn’s Revenge DLC left huge hints that Harley may have been impregnated by the Joker, and unfortunately, that she may have had a subsequent miscarriage.
If Harley went on to help Bruce save Gordon in the Arkham Knight comics, it may have been because they helped her at the end of that DLC. It’s possible that Harley is a broken woman at the end of that story, and finally gets the help she needs then because she actually needs it. Rocksteady likes to say they made Arkhamverse consistent and complete. If that were the case for this DLC, then it means they planned to resolve the loose ends, and they may be doing so with the last game.
It should also be noted that while Bruce is usually depicted in the games as antagonistic towards his rogues’ gallery, many of the said antagonists have been depicted as misunderstood/tragic figures. Bruce himself was depicted as sympathetic to his rogues’ gallery in the 90s Batman: TAS cartoon – which happens to share the same writer as the Arkham games, Bruce Timm.
So, if you follow my line of thought here, Harley Quinn may not be the same as the other villains in Arkham Knight who have it in for Bruce. She might even be a sleeper agent for the authorities, or at least someone who could be swayed to help them. After all, she was turned hero in the comics, and even in another video game, Injustice.
As for issue 3, in spite of what our source says, I think it is just as likely that this is the Arkham Kight who Bruce faces, and that it won’t spoil much about the Knight at all.
