SOE has decided to lock Planetside 2 at 30FPS for the PlayStation 4.
You can’t accuse SOE of not trying. They had publicly stated several times that they were working on getting the game running on 60FPS. However, for public previews, the game saw performance dips at this framerate, and even at the 50FPS range. This seemed unavoidable in the large scale battles the game usually hosts.
It prompted SOE head John Smedley to actually say flat out that it would not be possible to run Planetside 2 for the PlayStation 4 at 60FPS at all.
To be clear, the game has always run at 1080p, even when hosting battles with hundreds of players. The problems isn’t the console’s ability to render graphics, but the CPU. It’s the CPU that isn’t capable of rendering all those hundreds of players at 60FPS. Ultimately, even knowing that the PlayStation 4 is the most potentially powerful console in the market, it still runs into roadblocks that the PC has overcome.
Planetside 2 will be entering closed beta on PlayStation 4 today. Framerate aside, do you think SOE will be able to deliver on its promise of a better looking game on the console? Share your thoughts with us in the comments.
