The public opinion of the first Watch Dogs is severely divided. There are those who thoroughly enjoyed the hacking-centric game and others who thought it was a boring trudge-fest. It was certainly a shot in the dark from developer Ubisoft, who tried to provide something cool, new and innovative.
Despite the mediocre review scores and controversy surrounding the game, Watch Dogs sold well. This means that a sequel is all but inevitable. Ubisoft's creative director Jonathon Morin, in an interview with GamesTM, spoke on the improvements that they would make in a sequel to the first game.
“The challenge when we made the first game was to create something that would make people dream about something else," said Morin. “With a sequel, there is more pressure to push a brand forward and we now have to appeal to fans in a new way. You have to carry on taking risks."
It sounds like Ubisoft is still committed to the idea of Watch Dogs, which is certainly a good thing. It's way too common for new intellectual properties to fail, especially when they take on a relatively new idea like hacking. There's a lot of room for improvement, so we're looking forward to what Ubisoft brings us in a sequel.
