Bloodborne: Famitsu Confirms Randomly Generated Dungeons; Is The Game A Roguelike?

November 20, 2014 by Ryan Parreno

Famitsu also reveals a nasty new weapon; a SoulCalibur-esque whip sword.

From Software has shared new information and screenshots of Bloodborne on the latest issue of Famitsu.

The most noteworthy revelation is that the underground ruins will have completely randomized dungeons. Based on this, it seems that the game could possibly be a roguelike, or at least some parts of it are.

While From Software has been making action RPGs since 1994 with King’s Field, they are not quite known for making roguelikes, and their Dark Souls/Demon’s Souls series of games don’t use randomly generated dungeons. One could argue the games are hard enough as they are.

Roguelikes themselves have their appeal in how you never know what to expect when entering a dungeon. It can be smooth sailing, or you may grit your teeth at the hardest gaming sessions you have had in your life.

From is known for making their games hard to get through, but whether the underground ruins will be perennially difficult, or perhaps more forgiving in the service of replayability, depends on the algorithm From uses to generate the dungeons.

From also revealed a new weapon, a vicious looking whip sword, as popularized by Soulcalibur character Ivy Valentine. Whereas Namco’s treatment of the weapon is unnaturally clean and stylish, your Bloodborne traveler character can draw blood from his enemies with it. It also seems likely that this is one of the game’s transforming weapons, which raises questions about how the whip and handsword transformations work out.

Bloodborne will be released on PlayStation 4 on March 24, 2015. Check out a gallery of the Famitsu scans below.
