The Witcher 3 Needs to be on PS4

October 16, 2014 by Jacob Saylor

CD Projekt Red states that the franchise needed to branch out.

The Witcher series has gone through quite an evolution. Starting off as just a PC exclusive, The Witcher 2 branched out to the Xbox 360 first. Now, The Witcher 3 look to add a third platform to the mix in the form of Sony's Playstation 4. CD Projekt Red's Mical Gilewski spoke to VG247 about these release changes and why they had to be made.

"“With The Witcher 3 we knew that we would have to reach a wider audience,”said Gilewski. "“We needed to be on the new consoles and in particular the PS4, because a lot of people are attracted to them.”

Considering the Playstation 4 has been the top dog of this generation so far, we're not surprised that the developer made this jump. While The Witcher series has seen its most powerful graphics capabilities on the PC, Gilewski stated that the new console technology of the Playstation 4 and Xbox One changed the way they looked at development.

“It’s only with the next-gen consoles that we can do much more,” he offered. “Open-world was something we’ve always wanted to do and we believed that was the missing element for this story. To make it truly immersive we had to let people explore it their way. We always wanted this but we couldn’t because of technical limitations and because of the experience and size of the team.”

“For The Witcher 2 it was very hard to make the game run on the Xbox 360. It was a demanding game, system-wise on PC. Then we had to squeeze all that on the other platform. We had to redo a lot of the stuff inside the game.

With CD Projekt Red's commitment to making the game accessible on multiple platforms comes a sense of quality that wasn't there before. We're not saying CD Projekt Red has made bad games, but there's also an expectation from our end that The Witcher 3 really pushes their franchise into the veritable stratosphere. They've certainly implied it will be their most immersive.
