Was that headline too sensationalist for you? Well TOO BAD, because this, unfortunately, appears to be the complete truth. In yet another reminder of just how useless Pachter's opinions really are, the man has stated that he doesn't believe development personnel should be paid for working overtime, and developers shouldn't complain about unpaid overtime because "that's just how the industry is."
Well you know what? No it isn't, and in the rare case that it IS, we should all do as much as possible to reverse that situation.
I've worked in the game industry for a bunch of years, doing everything from customer service to IT to QA to actual development, and I think I can just go right ahead and say "Mr. Pachter, go fuck yourself."
Salary pay or hourly, it makes absolutely no difference. The stress that's imposed on developers to work overtime must be compensated, regardless of the pay structure that a developer is set to. As a person who's never worked on a game before, the short of it is that until he spends two years working on a game, under constant pressure to meet an arbitrary deadline, his opinion on the subject is absolutely irrelevant.
But then, it must be easy to release these kinds of statements when all your job entails is sitting behind a desk, pretending you know what's going to happen in video games in the next six months. I wonder if anyone has ever called him out on his predictions.
