Guilty Gear Xrd: Unreal Engine Can Produce Great Anime-Quality Cutscenes

September 18, 2014 by Tony Ponce

Also check out gameplay footage of new fighters Sin Kiske and Elphelt.

Guilty Gear Xrd, the next chapter in the hard rock-infused Arc System Works' fighting series, will be powered by the Unreal Engine, in case you've forgotten. Though Unreal is often associated with shooters, it's been put to good use here in giving the game an anime feel that resembles the hand-drawn style of past Guilty Gears. The Tokyo Game Show trailer above mostly consists of cutscenes, but it'll give you a nice idea of how well Xrd maintains the 2D look even in 3D.

If you want some in-depth gameplay footage, check out the video below. You'll get to see the PS4 build in action as well as how new fighters Sin Kiske and Elphelt play (Elphelt's name was previously romanized as "Elfert"). Elphelt will be available as post-lunch DLC for 800 yen (about $8), but anyone who pre-orders will get her for free.

Guilty Gear Xrd hits PS3 and PS4 in Japan on December 4. The Western release may come out this winter.
