Update: We were mistaken. The new update only adds stability fixes. The Network ID and Miiverse support was added last year in an earlier patch.

The Nintendo 3DS system has been updated to include support for the new Nintendo Network ID system. The update brings the Nintendo handheld into the 21st century, veering away from its crappy friendcode system for a proper system of network IDs.
Users can now create a Nintendo Network ID on the 3DS family of systems, and they can create a new ID or register the same ID they used for their Wii U system, if they have one.
Using the same ID on both the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U systems will allow users to combine their Nintendo eShop balances and Wish Lists. A Nintendo Network ID will now be required to download free content, including game demos, from Nintendo eShop.
Nintendo has prepared a page explaining exactly how the Nintendo Network ID system works for the 3DS. Read it here.
Additionally, the latest system update brings added support for the Miiverse on the Nintendo 3DS. For those not in the know, Miiverse isa n online social hub that lets users interact with other players around the globe through their Mii characters. Users can view posts from their 3DS, Wii U or online via computer or mobile device, and post illustrations and comments by signing in to Miiverse with their Network ID.
To update the system, just head on over to the System Settings, enter Other Settings, and force a System Update. Just make sure you’re connected to the internet before doing that.
