Jim Ryan, the president and CEO of SCE Europe had a talk with the folks from GameReactor.eu in an interview that covered topics such as PlayStation TV, PS Now, Project Morpheus and Sony’s rivalry with Microsoft.
The interview began with the interviewer pointing out newly announced features for the Xbox One and how Microsoft was finally catching up to Sony and its PlayStation 4. In response, Ryan asked whether the company had launched in Scandinavia yet.
When he was told of their planned release date, Ryan replied: "That's good. It's some way away. We'll look to carry on giving Scandinavian gamers a great PlayStation 4 experience.”
Ryan went on to discuss the PlayStation’s improved performance in the UK market, a former Microsoft stronghold, and how Sony had managed to raise its profile.
After some discussion about the PlayStation Now and how the PlayStation Vita didn’t get much time on stage during this year’s E3 conference due to other priorities, Ryan had plenty to say about Project Morpheus, Sony’s virtual reality device and competitor to the Oculus Rift.
He explained that Project Morpheus might well be a “technology exercise” and that there’s a chance it won’t be released.
"We've been very clear that what we're doing now with Morpheus, it's a technology exercise,” said Ryan. “And we're listening, watching people who are using it, and watching consumer reaction.
“We're talking to developers very seriously about what sort of games they think they might make, because you know just taking a PS4 experience and plugging it into a Morpheus, that's not going to work, so you know we've got to have some very bespoke, specific Morpheus content, and we're just in the process of figuring that out. All this takes time, because if we're going to do this, and it's if still, we've got to do it right," he said.
Ryan added that everybody at PlayStation is “really, really excited” about the project and that there is considerable momentum, despite the lack of any launch announcement.
